Tampa Genie Service
Genie is one of the most-trusted residential garage door opener brands in Tampa Bay, especially in homes built or upgraded over the last 25 years. We service Genie openers daily, from the original Pro Screw Drive that’s been running since the 90s to the latest WiFi-enabled SilentMax with Aladdin Connect smart features.
Worth knowing about Genie: Genie is owned by Overhead Door Corporation, which makes them the largest residential opener brand independent of the Chamberlain/LiftMaster family. Genie is best known for being the only major brand still manufacturing screw-drive openers for residential use, plus their proprietary Intellicode rolling-code security and Aladdin Connect smart platform.
M&T Garage Door & Gates is a Tampa-based team servicing Genie openers across Hillsborough County. Our trucks roll fully stocked with the most common Genie repair parts: screw drive worm gear kits, logic boards by model family, capacitors, safety sensors, Intellicode replacement remotes, Aladdin Connect units, and battery backup systems. Most Genie repairs finish in a single visit.
All Genie Models
We service every current and legacy Genie model across all three drive types. Here’s the lineup we work on daily.
The quietest residential opener in the Genie lineup. SilentMax 1000 features ultra-quiet belt drive with a steel-reinforced belt, popular for bedroom-adjacent garages and homes with rooms above the garage.
Genie’s signature drive system. Pro Screw Drive openers use a precision-machined steel screw rod instead of belts or chains. Genie is the only major manufacturer still producing residential screw-drive openers. Fewer moving parts, less maintenance, reliable Florida-climate performance.
Heavy-duty chain-drive Genie openers. Excelerator features high-torque motors and reinforced hardware for heavier doors and high-cycle households. The workhorse of the Genie lineup.
Premium Genie residential line. Pro Max features 3/4 HP motors, smart features, battery backup, and reinforced hardware. The flagship for homeowners who want the full feature set.
Mid-range numbered Genie series. 7055 is a popular chain-drive unit found in many Tampa homes. 7155 TKV is the WiFi-enabled belt-drive variant common in newer construction.
Entry-level Genie residential models. 2028 is a popular chain-drive starter unit. 2128 is the upgraded variant with smart features and WiFi connectivity.
Genie’s flagship smart product. The Aladdin Connect system adds smartphone control, real-time notifications, and voice assistant integration to compatible Genie openers. Genie’s answer to MyQ.
Genie uses Intellicode rolling-code security (Genie’s proprietary system, distinct from LiftMaster Security+). We program and replace every Genie remote and keypad including the popular GIT-1, GIT-2, GIT-3, and GICTD universal remotes.
Common Issues
Most Genie failures fall into predictable patterns. Here’s what we see most often in Tampa.
Genie-specific failure pattern. Screw-drive openers use a steel worm gear that can develop wear or stripping over 10+ years. Symptom: motor runs but door moves slowly or stops mid-travel.
Common after Tampa Bay power surges, lightning strikes, and natural aging. Each Genie series uses brand-specific boards. Symptom: erratic behavior, won't program, or stops responding entirely.
WiFi pairing failures, app connection drops, voice assistant integration problems. Aladdin Connect is Genie's smart platform and we troubleshoot connectivity issues during service visits.
SilentMax belts last 12 to 15 years before showing wear, but Tampa Bay heat and humidity can accelerate aging. Symptom: visible cracks, slipping during operation, louder operation than the unit used to make.
The "humming but not moving" symptom. Motor capacitor fails, motor tries to start but can't generate enough force. Common Genie repair under $200 and one of the easier fixes when caught early.
Genie remotes use Intellicode rolling-code with a programming sequence different from LiftMaster/Chamberlain. Symptom: remote won't program, lost sync, works intermittently. We know every Genie series sequence.
Photo eyes are a known wear point in Florida humidity and Tampa Bay sun exposure. Symptom: door won't close or reverses immediately. Genie sensors use a different mounting system requiring brand-specific knowledge.
Genie DC battery backup units fail every 3 to 5 years. Florida law requires battery backup on all openers installed since 2020. We carry replacement batteries and retrofit backup units on older Genie models.
Smart Service
Aladdin Connect is Genie’s signature smart product, and the major Chamberlain/LiftMaster MyQ alternative for homeowners with Genie openers. We install Aladdin Connect units, configure the app, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and integrate with smart home systems on a daily basis.
Smartphone control from anywhere, real-time open/close notifications, family/service-provider access sharing, voice assistant integration with Alexa and Google Home, security event logging.
Add smart features to compatible Genie openers. Mount the unit, connect to your existing Genie opener, pair with the app, configure smart home integrations. Typical install: 30 to 45 minutes.
If your existing Genie works fine but lacks smart features, adding Aladdin Connect is the simpler upgrade path versus replacing the entire opener. Smart functionality without replacing working hardware.
WiFi pairing failures, app connection drops, voice assistant integration problems, firmware update issues. We diagnose connectivity issues during service visits and resolve most problems on the same call.
We configure Alexa and Google Home integration during installation or service visits. Aladdin Connect supports voice commands and smart home routine integration with major platforms.
Aladdin Connect is Genie's answer to MyQ (the Chamberlain/LiftMaster smart platform). Both deliver similar smartphone control and notifications. Aladdin Connect works with Genie openers, MyQ works with Chamberlain/LiftMaster. We service both platforms.
Truck Inventory
Most Genie repairs finish in a single visit because we carry the right parts. Standard truck inventory includes the Genie-specific worm gear kits that other Tampa companies have to special-order.
If your Genie needs a specialty or legacy part not stocked, we order quickly and schedule the follow-up visit fast.

Why M&T
Our technicians are trained on the full Genie lineup across all three drive types: screw drive, belt drive, and chain drive. Brand-specific training means faster diagnosis and the right parts the first time.
Most Tampa garage door companies don't service screw-drive openers because they're rare and require Genie-specific knowledge. We do. Worm gears, screw rod alignment, drive system replacement — all stocked, all serviced.
Including Genie-specific worm gears that competitors have to special-order. Logic boards, capacitors, SilentMax belts, Excelerator chains, Intellicode remotes, Aladdin Connect units, battery backups — all stocked.
We install, configure, and troubleshoot Aladdin Connect smart systems daily. Smart home integration done right means you actually use the smart features, not just have them installed and forget about them.
We tell you honestly when repair makes sense and when replacement is the smarter financial decision. We don't push the highest-margin option. If your 5-year-old Genie just needs a $200 board, that's what we recommend.
How It Works
Call (813) 796-0668 with your Genie model number if known (sticker on the side of the motor unit). We dispatch a tech with the right parts stocked.
Tech arrives, runs full diagnostic on motor, board, drive system (screw/belt/chain), sensors, and smart connectivity (if applicable). Identifies the actual failure.
Firm written quote covering parts, labor, and warranty terms. No work begins until you've approved the quote.
Most repairs finish in the same visit. Before we leave, we test all functions, program new Intellicode remotes, configure Aladdin Connect if applicable, and provide written warranty documentation.

FAQs
Most Genie repairs in Tampa fall between $100 and $350, depending on the failure. Capacitor replacement runs $100 to $175. Logic board replacement runs $200 to $350. Screw drive worm gear replacement (Genie-specific) runs $175 to $275. SilentMax belt replacement runs $200 to $325. We provide a firm written quote on-site before any work begins.
Genie is owned by Overhead Door Corporation, while Chamberlain and LiftMaster are owned by the same separate parent company. Genie is the largest residential opener brand independent of the Chamberlain/LiftMaster family. Key differences: Genie is the only major brand still making screw-drive openers, uses Intellicode rolling-code (vs. Security+), and runs the Aladdin Connect smart platform (vs. MyQ). All three brands are quality manufacturers.
Yes, and we’re one of the few in Tampa Bay that specifically does. Screw-drive openers are uncommon because Genie is the only major manufacturer still producing them. Most garage door companies don’t stock the worm gears or know the specific service procedures. We stock screw-drive worm gear kits on every truck and have technicians trained specifically on Pro Screw Drive units.
Depends on the repair cost. If the repair is under $200 and your Genie is otherwise running fine, repair makes sense. If the repair is $300+ on a 15+ year old unit, replacement (typically $500 to $850 installed for a new smart opener) often makes more financial sense. We’ll give you an honest assessment during the diagnostic.
Usually yes. We service Genie openers going back 25+ years. Most “discontinued” Genies use parts still in production or compatible with current Genie components. Genie has been good about parts continuity across generations. For genuinely obsolete units where parts can’t be sourced, we’ll be honest and recommend replacement.
Most common causes: (1) router signal too weak in the garage (try moving the router or adding a WiFi extender), (2) Aladdin Connect firmware needs updating (check the app), (3) WiFi network changed and the unit needs re-pairing, or (4) the Aladdin Connect unit itself has failed (rare but possible after lightning strikes). We troubleshoot Aladdin Connect connectivity during service visits and resolve most issues on-site.
Only if performed improperly. We use OEM Genie parts and follow manufacturer service procedures specifically to preserve warranty coverage. DIY repairs and untrained-technician work commonly void Genie warranties. Genie’s warranty terms are specific to the model series, so we always check warranty status during the initial diagnostic.
In most cases, yes. Aladdin Connect is compatible with most Genie openers manufactured in the last 15+ years and select non-Genie openers. We verify compatibility during the visit and walk through smart features after installation. Typical install time: 30 to 45 minutes including app configuration.
Almost always a failed motor capacitor. The motor tries to start but can’t generate enough force. Common Genie failure pattern, easy fix in most cases. On screw-drive Genies, it can also indicate worm gear binding. Stop using the opener immediately (continued humming can damage the motor) and call for service.
Honest answer: depends on what you value. Stick with Genie if: you have multiple Intellicode remotes and keypads you want to keep using, you want screw-drive (only Genie makes them), or you’ve already invested in Aladdin Connect smart home setup. Switch to Chamberlain/LiftMaster if: you prefer the MyQ smart platform, you want the most popular industry standard, or your existing Genie remotes are old and need replacing anyway. Quality is comparable across all three brands.
